Chapter 4 in your textbook talks about using technology to meet the needs of diverse learners. As a teachers, how can you use technology to reach the different types of learners in your classroom?
Give at least 2 examples and reference the book at least once. If the reference from the book is long paraphrase is according to the APA guidelines.
As our book states, for students with disabilities, technology can offer an important avenue to increased independence and participation in classroom activities. One example of technology use for students who are hard of hearing are assistive listening devices. Assistive listening devices help to reduce the effect of poor acoustics in classrooms. An example of technology used to help students who struggle with reading is recorded books. Recorded books are appropriate for students who can understand material at their grade level when they hear it, even though they may struggle with decoding and comprehending when they read it.

ReplyDeleteAs an educator, I can use technology to play an effective role to support the effort and address my student’s needs. Moreover, technology can be my helping hand to support students learning. Nevertheless, there are many ways to use technology to reach the different types of learners in the classroom, such as, read aloud books, this is a great way for students that have reading complications to be able to listen to the same story that their peers are reading. As it states on page 91 of the classroom section of the text that certain software can allow the students to click on a word that will help them hear how to pronounce the word (Lever-Duffy & McDonald, 2003). Another type of technology is the special features that Apple and Microsoft offer with hero operating system which is the sticky keys. I feel this system is great as it allows individuals to press keys to create the executive function (Lever-Duffy & McDonald, 2003). Nevertheless, this system works for each individual whether diverse or not. Lastly, another interesting one for me is the National Clearing House of English Language Leaners Acquisition. The NCELA websites allow educators to visit the site that offers research and webinars on topics for teachers to be aware of how to teach culturally and linguistically diverse students(CLD) (Lever-Duffy & McDonald, 2003)

In chapter four of our textbook, “Teaching and Learning with Technology,” it stated, “It is the teacher’s responsibility to try to find every possible way to reach and teach every student. Technology can play a special and effective role to support your efforts and address these students’ needs. Technology, creatively applied, is a powerful tool that can be utilized to address the needs of diverse learners and make the teaching and learning process more effective, efficient, and successful. Technology can help to remediate visual, auditory, and physical disabilities.” One example I would use in the classroom would be the word processing software application. In chapter four it explained, “Word processing can help students who cannot easily hold a pencil to produce neat, legible documents.” The second example I would use in the classroom would be the concept mapping software application. In chapter four it explained, “Concept mapping software helps students to visually organize and relate abstract concepts. Concept mapping provides structure and organization for the writing process and allows students to visually see how abstract ideas are interconnected.” I believe technology benefits all students needs no matter how diverse they are because there are so many ways to use technology in the classroom along with various software applications.

Technology is such a fascinating and useful tool when teaching students. There are so many different websites, tools, and software that helps meets the diverse needs of students. One tool I think is great idea to help students see a connection in two lessons is the Concept Mapping. It uses pictures and webs to show the students visually how things connect and what the bigger picture can form. It can be used for many different subjects too such as science, math, and writing. I had never used Concept Mapping before this semester, but it really helps to break things down and see where information fits. Another tool I really found useful was Comprehensive Input Software. Our book Teaching and Learning with Technology states how useful this software is to students that do not speak predominately English language. This software helps explain things in the English language, but in an easier format using visuals, vocabulary, different tasks, and even some hands on activities. Another tool our book mentioned that I had never heard of before was a Text to Speech Software. This software reads out loud what the student has to wrote to help them edit their work. This software would be helping to a student that has poor reading skills and would help them write more clearly.

As a future teacher, I will have students of various learning styles enter into my classroom. According to our textbook " It is the teachers way to find every possible way to reach and teach every student". I can use technology in my classroom to meet the needs of diverse learners by using concept mapping. By using concept maps the students are able to see visual connections and gather ideas. Another tool I would use in my classroom is the text to speech software. This software will read aloud whatever the student has written and can be used in the place for students with the inability to speak. This tool can also be effective by the feedback it gives to the students. Through feedback they are able to listen to see if they have made in grammatical areas that are often times overlooked through writing.
ReplyDeleteI have found 2 very important ways to use Technology in my classroom to help diverse learners in Reading & Language Arts. Our text says the following, " Therefore, students with learning difficulties can utilize existing technology to improve reading comprehension and increase reading Independence". Our text also says, " technology can support students who struggle with reading by providing alternative ways to access text based materials". Since the majority of classroom activities involve reading with either comprehending instructions or reading a chapter book with the class; lack of decoding skills should not slow a student down with learning content matter. So I chose Recorded Books & Computer based High Interest -Low Level Books. These formats are geared to help struggling readers, ESL or CLD students. The recorded books are on CD & mp3. This is a great link with lots of Recoreded books. http://www.techsupportalert.com/free-audio-books-children . I would look through the links and see if I can find books similar to the books the rest of the class is reading . I could use this as a small group instruction with all students reading the same book from their own personal electronic devices. This would help students to follow along with the text. I would also use Computer Based High Interest-Low
ReplyDeleteLevel books to highlight text that is being read. This software is used to promote fluency by the reading text being highlighted as it is being read. Most of all students who are not a strong reader can still read novels that are written on developmentally lower reading levels. I would also use Kidsvid to continue to challenge my advance readers by giving them tutorials on how to use technology to express learning in a production assignment of a DVD or CD. The Kidsvid website is on 4teachers.org. It teaches students step by step how to create a video. This includes ELA regarding script writing and comprehension and speaking which are all apart of the Georgia Performance Standards. I look forward to reaching all students where they are with technology.

There are many ways I could use technology to each all the different learning styles within my classroom. When using technology to reach all students’ needs, I will be able to develop diverse lessons, connect children’s experiences to lessons and incorporate all students’ needs in the instruction (Lever-Duffy & Mcdonald, 2003). These types of technology would vary based on students’ learning style and level of learning. For example, students with special needs would benefit from talking spell-checkers, which allow students to have their work read aloud misspelled words and all the suggested corrections (Lever-Duffy & McDonald, 2003). On the other hand, with students that may be more advanced, I may use different types of software, like concept mapping, to have students gather their ideas for writing.
ReplyDeleteUsing technology in the classroom can be very beneficial to all types of learners. With so many types of diverse learners in the classroom it is important to modify your instructional plan in order to reach and teach every student. Technology in the classroom is especially useful for students with special needs as it is an avenue to increased independence and participation in classroom activities (Lever-Duffy & McDonald, 2003). Recorded books are one way that a teacher can meet the needs of certain students. During an activity involving reading a book, a student who cannot read on grade level can listen and follow along in the book. This gives them the independence of doing it themselves without someone’s help, which will build confidence. There is also software available that allows the student to read the directions or writing and they can click on a word that they do not understand to hear the word or give a definition. This technology would also be very useful. I also love concept-mapping. I use this a lot in my class as it is a great tool to collect your ideas before beginning the writing process. Concept mapping is a great way for students to visually see how abstract ideas are interconnected (Lever-Duffy & McDonald, 2003). It is also useful because you can use it in either diagram form or writing form. There are so many technological tools and software that will help a teacher meet the needs of every student!

Teachers instinctively teach in the same modality in which they learn. For example, an aural learner will be very comfortable in leading open-ended discussions with few visual aids, while a visual learner may rely on charts and diagrams without adequately explaining concepts aloud. Integrating technology into classroom instruction means more than teaching basic computer skills and software programs in a separate computer class. Effective tech integration must happen across the curriculum in ways that research shows deepen and enhance the learning process. In particular, it must support four key components of learning: active engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback, and connection to real-world experts. Effective technology integration is achieved when the use of technology is routine and transparent and when technology supports curricular goals.

ReplyDeleteWhy use technology to help diverse learner?
Because all children do not learn in the same way.
• Because NCLB says all children need to become proficient.
• Because research and practice demonstrate that differentiated instruction techniques are effective.
• Because we can maximize student's growth by meeting each student where he or she is and helping them progress.
• Because of the diversity of students found in today's classrooms. (ELL, disabilities, cultural, backgrounds, etc.)
Technology can help you tailor instruction to meet the needs of all students by allowing changes to content. Technology is also an excellent platform for cooperative learning. Some common classroom technology can support them in this effort. Many of the technology resources that most schools already have at hand can be used to facilitate this kind of tailored instruction. Simple graphics software and word processors, as well as resources and tools found on the Internet, offer students a variety of ways to access content, work with information to develop understanding, and demonstrate what they know.
Use working document that provides a framework for assessing the use of technology in a classroom with a diverse student population. These categories, based on the learning context, are used to cluster benchmarks and indicators of equity and excellence in campuses and classrooms
• use a variety of languages consistent with language understood by students,
• use technology as a tool for literacy development in English and other languages,
• use assistive technology to increase access to all students,
• modify the use of technology to ensure that all students benefit from instruction,
• are accessible to all students, and do not target only a selected group,
• reflect a deep knowledge of technology as a resource for bilingual and multicultural education, and
• Capitalize on the power of technology to provide equal opportunities to learn for all students.

In the textbook chapter 4, "Technology for Diverse Learners", it states that "It is a teacher's responsibility to try to find every possible way to reach and teach every student. Technology can play a special and effective role to support your efforts and address these student's needs."(Lever-Duffy & McDonald J. 2003) As a future educator, I believe that it is my responsibility to teach, guide and help every student that will step in my classroom. I have the obligation to design instruction to meets all the different types of learners and needs; by utilizing any and all resources and technologies available to me. For example, as an educator when using a Power point presentation I will be meeting the needs of both visual and auditory learners. Technology allows me as a teacher, to differentiate instructions among the students. By utilizing technology such as a software game and adapting it to the students learning abilities, I am providing the same content but at each students level; giving me the opportunity to make learning for them more personal.

According to our textbook, Teaching and Learning with Technology (2011), there are many way to help diverse learners. The authors discussed how a word processing application can be beneficial to students that lack the fine motor skills to hold a pencil. This software can allow the students to still put words down on paper without working so hard to hold a pen or pencil. If a student has to concentrate too hard on writing they may not be able to concentrate on what they are writing as well. Another idea that the authors discussed was to use concept mapping applications with students that have a hard time planning their reports. A concept map can help during the planning stage to organize their paper. Once the student looks at the map they can write without having to think about in what order and what they are going to write about. This frees up the students brain to focus only on getting the words on the paper.
ReplyDeleteTechnology can be used to reach students with disabilities and other special needs . Students with learning disabilities can benefit from the use of software programs like text-to-speech that assist the student with reading words they don’t recognize (91). Assistive output devices are also an option for learners with special needs. This can be used to provide an option to organizing and writing with technology that won’t require the learner to be exempt due to output limitations (96). There are also technology advancements that support English Language Learners. The available products , comprehensible input, helps “support understanding for students whose culture and language differ from that of the classroom context” (101).

According to the text, technology can help students with disabilities become more independent in school, it can help them participate more and feel more included in the group, and it can help students who don't have disabilities learn how others see things and get a different point of view. Teachers can use videos, concept maps, pictures, audio books, and recorded instructions for students who may struggle with reading, are Dyslexic, or are blind. Teachers can even use software that types as you speak for students who struggle with writing. Technology can also be used to explore the different cultures and backgrounds of students in the class by taking virtual tours, watching videos or looking at photographs, listening to music from a different culture or reading books, and students can even have online pen pals from all over the world.

It is extremely important as a teacher to be able to reach the different learning types within the classroom. When technology is introduced, it helps ensure that a quality of learning is taking place. One example of how I could use technology to reach the different learning types would be by having a translation software. This software can help ELL students and myself communicate with each other better. The text states that programs like text-to-speech makes it easier for students who have poor reading skills. This program allows the student to hear what has been written, to give instant feedback to the learner. eBooks are another form of technology that could be used for the diverse student who has trouble reading regular text and who has troubled vision. Implementing technology to meet the needs of the diverse learners can help them reach their potential at a rate that is good for them.

As a teacher I can use technology to help students express themselves better and learn easier in the classroom. Students have many ways of learning in today’s generations. Some students are audio learners, some students are visual learners and some are both. Technology is so far advance that it allows you to do just about anything. As a teacher I can use the technology to teach multiply learning abilities at one time. I can allow students to use software programs that are more advance then there mind and paper/pen to pull out there creativity for assignments. The technology will allow them to search pictures and or information to further enhance their explanation for assignments. The technology will be easier for students by allowing them to complete and finish assignments at any time. Students will be able to study/review material at home or in the classroom. They will be able to share information with the teacher and other classmates if needed. The book states that technology allows students to click on words for the correct pronunciation. This is very helpful for students who may not know a certain language. With the program students can enhance their reading and comprehension skills for test, quizzes and assignments.(Leer-Duffy and Mcdonald,2003).
ReplyDeleteThe average classroom consists of various learners. In order to assure students are learning, it is vital that an educator considers the various learning modalities. Technology tools such as the Smartboard is capable of doing just that. It allows visual learners the opportunity for their visual needs to be met by skills, videos, etc. being displayed from the board. Also, those kinesthetic learners would have the opportunity to become a part of interactive learning as they are allowed to actively touch the board during various activities. Chapter 4 within the text stated that as an educator it is my job to reach and teach every student. It is through the use of Technology such as the smart board that this would be able to be done.
ReplyDeleteAs a teacher I can use technology to help students express themselves better and learn easier in the classroom. For example, If I have students who come from different countries and English is not there strongest language, I can use the laptops in my classroom and display worksheets via web that translate the information in their language and I can have English programs that will say the words slowly for easier comprehension online. I can also use videos to illustrate the assignments so they can get a visual understanding. Another example would be for students who are shy and need to interact more. I could use technology/tablets for collaboration purposes. I could place the assignments on the tablets and place students in groups so they could work together to complete assignments. The technology will allow the students to work hand and hand and will allow them to us creativity and many skills for the assignment. The technology will deepen and enhance the learning process for students. Students will be able to study/review material at home or in the classroom. They will be able to share information with the teacher and other classmates if needed. The book states that technology allows students to click on words for the correct pronunciation. This is very helpful for students who may not know a certain language.
