Week 3

ISTE’s NETS•T standards suggest that it is a teacher’s responsibility to use technology to enhance his or her professional productivity. Administrative software is one of the primary tools to accomplish this standard. Most districts use and make available to teachers a suite of productivity tools including a word processor, spreadsheet, database, and presentation tool as well as communications tools such as an email program. Should teachers be required to be knowledgeable in each productivity tool in the suite available to them?  Why or why not?

  1. Yes, I believe teachers should be required to be knowledgeable in each productivity tool in the suite available to them. Our book states that although individual educators have little choice in what productivity software is available to them, with a bit of creativity that software can be applied to myriad teaching and professional tasks. Office productivity software, used in the classroom or other academic spaces such as the media center or faculty workroom, can be a great asset to busy educators. The computer-educators job is to learn to use the software and apply it to the non teaching tasks for which he or she is responsible. These tools are designed to aid teachers in administrative tasks by being user friendly and each application performs a specific function for the user. If teachers are not knowledgeable about these tools made available to them then what purpose do they serve. I believe teachers should be required to know how to utilize these tools to their benefit.

  2. I would have to say “yes”, teachers should be required to be knowledgeable in the productivity tools available to them. I think when a teacher has this knowledge it can only expand their ideas and creativity for the classroom. These tools make communicating and instruction for the classroom easier and more efficient. Teachers can use these tools to create presentations for the class and design their own assignments in Word. These tools open up a whole new window of opportunity instead of just pulling out books or workbook. Also the spreadsheets and database tools are great for keeping records of students’ progress and help to make it easier to evaluate how well each class is doing year to year on certain standards. Lastly I think these tools really make lesson planning and classroom information adjustable for easy changes if needed. Sometimes things happen or we realize it would be best to omit part of something and by using these tools it gives the teacher access to quickly make those changes.

  3. I believe teachers should be required to be knowledgeable in each productivity tool in the site available to them. The first reason I believe they should know the tools is to keep there job.If your job is starting to enforce a program to better there company than an employee should want to learn it to keep there job.I also believe learning the tools will allow the teachers to work more afectively and it will be easier to transfer documents and other paperwork to boardleaders and other staff. I also believe teacher should be aware of the technology around them so they can be as product in and out the classroom as they can

  4. I think that all teachers should be required to be knowledgeable, and use, administrative software that helps them enhance their productivity. These programs and software have been designed to help teachers be more productive, make their jobs easier, simplify data, and communicate with other teachers, administration, and even teachers and students. If the school is providing the software for teachers, they should use it and thoroughly understand how to use it. If every teacher but one is using a website that allows every teacher in the school to see lesson plans, comments, and school-wide grades, it would be pointless to use if everyone isn't using it or doesn't know how. Every teacher in the school has to focus on their class, but the also have to keep in mind that they are on the same team by all working in the same school, and a team is only as strong as their weakest link. In this day and age where technology is used in almost everything we do, it is critical for teachers to be knowledgeable and use the software the other teachers in their school are using.

  5. Yes, I think that teachers should be knowledgeable in each productivity tool in the suite available to them. I believe it is important because it is vital to use any and every resource that can help you be productive in your job as a teacher. These software tools are away to be creative and differentiate your lessons. They are useful for staying inform on what is happening at your school and district, such as with school email programs. The days of handwriting data is over and these programs can make teachers more productive and simplify the administrative side of their job. Schools are now using goggle docs to stay informed on grades, lesson plans, student data and much more. Instead of meeting after meetings just to update data or charts teachers can just write in the google doc and everyone will see it. Teachers can use the presentation software to make class portfolios to share with parents, other teachers and administrators. Classroom management software is available to maintain grades, take attendance and make seating charts. The possibilities are endless. With the proper knowledge of these tools the possibilities are endless.

  6. I think teachers should be required to be knowledgeable about administrative software, at least the four major types stated in the book, which are “word processors, electronic spreadsheets, database management systems and presentation software” (pg. 172). If a school administrator desires for their employees to be knowledgeable in other systems, I think it should be the school administrator’s duty to have a workshop or training about those systems. In regards to teachers being knowledgeable to the systems that are available to them, yes, I absolutely think teachers should know how to use all systems that are available to them. This would allow teachers to use these system to teach their students in many different ways. This could benefit students because teachers would be able to see which system helps which students learn best. In that case, teachers could cover the same topic in many different ways.

  8. I believe teachers should be required to be knowledgeable in each productivity tool in the suite available to them. In chapter seven of our textbook, “Teaching and Learning with Technology,” it stated, “Whether an educator needs to use software as a tool to create a letter to send home to parents or to turn a computer into a tireless student tutor, being able to select and use the best software package for the task us a valuable skill for every educator. Educators must be sufficiently software literate to be able to recommend software that can help their students learn and then be able to serve as guides through the software acquisition and implementation process. For teachers, the role of software is no less important for their administrative and academic tasks. All these administrative software tools help educators do their jobs more effectively and productively.” I believe that because we are currently living in the era of technology there is no excuse as to why a teacher should not learn these productivity tools. Productivity tools include word processors, spreadsheets, databases, presentation tools and communication tools. I believe if this discussion question was asked in the 1990’s, it could be a debatable question and leave it up to the teacher’s preference. As technology advances, teachers should be able to keep up with these advancements while knowing how to use them to provide their students with effective education and classroom management.

  9. I believe that all teachers should be required to be knowledgeable in each productivity tool available to them. As the classroom has begun to revolve more around technology, it is essential that teachers keep up with the technology made available. The tools are great for communicating with parents, and to improve classroom management. As stated in chapter 7, these tools are put in place to improve the teaching and learning environment in the classroom. By being knowledgeable of these tools, a teacher can enhance their lesson plans. The tools allow the teacher to go beyond the ordinary textbooks. For example, spreadsheets can be used for more than numbers or keeping up with the student’s progress. While doing my one-day observation, I noted that the teacher was using a spreadsheet to identify the roles of the local government. So we see that these tools made available are very versatile and can be used for many purposes.

  10. Yes, it is the teacher's responsibility to use technology to enhance his or her professional productivity. In order to be an effective teacher and have effective communication in the classroom, the educator must know how to efficiently navigate the program that is being used. By having an understanding of the technology programs this will cut down on any down time or chaos in the classroom. The teacher will be prepared when transitioning with the students and will increase the chances of running a well managed classroom. In my current school of employment we use a program called infinite campus. The teacher must know how to effectively use this program in order to contact parents, view allergies, grades, absences, submit referrals, and record information from parent conversations. If the teacher is not able to navigate this program they then risk the chance of having positive communication with parents. Lastly, throughout the school year my school will offer tutorials on how to navigate various programs, as a future teacher I will definitely take this opportunity to learn as much as possible when the opportunity presents itself.

  11. I, honestly, feel that teachers ought to be required to have knowledge in each productivity tool. My reason is technology has enhanced education and all other professions and personal aspect in a constructive way. Teachers shouldn’t want to be left in the dark when it comes to technology. Also, those productivity tools made it easier to do attendance, grades, lesson plans, and even behavioral reports. Furthermore, I feel that the tools keep educators organize and on top of things, with alarms that you can attach to different things. Emails will help educators keep in contact with administrative staff, other teachers, and even parents to let them know the progress of each child and if there is any need to be concerned. Many times you can’t get hold of someone on the phone or even in person. So being able to send them an email or message will help everyone.

  12. Yes I feel like teachers should know the technology required for them to use in the classroom. Everywhere you look technology is all around us and the students today rely on it and use it all the time. After reading about the many uses I found that it can be very useful and make the teacher’s role a lot easier and to be able to have information needed, such as lesson plans and more at your fingertips. The software makes recording and record keeping easier and it is organized. The web applications and software together are great for organizing records, making lesson plans, and resources available to you and your students, through schools and home. These things can help our students with learn in a competitive, information-rich world. It can help them become information literate and most likely be successful and lifelong learners. Yes if teachers know how to use technology and apply it to everyday learning, everyone will benefit.

  13. I think they should be aware of how to use the tools; but I also feel like it depends on the grade level. 3-5 a definite yes because this is when you will use these tools in teaching content as well as using devices in the classroom. Pre-K-K no because with 4-5 year old they can't read so it want be as important. ALL teachers should know how to use email because that's the main source of communication with administration, superintendant, and co-workers.

  14. I feel that teachers should be knowledgeable on the software and programs, including e-mail, that school systems offer because the school board is expecting the software to be used. Software cannot be used if the users are not knowledgeable about the software. These programs can be very useful to teachers. Choosing not to use them is almost irresponsible because the teacher would not be teaching to their best ability. E-mail is necessary because it is the main form of communication between teachers and administration.

  15. Teachers should be required to be knowledgeable in each productivity tool. With several tools available, there will be different means of communicating. If teacher is not knowledgeable about a specific tool and that tool is used by another educator or administrator, there will be a gap in communication. As stated in the text, “Much of an educator’s time is consumed in completing the many administrative tasks necessary to prepare and maintain an effective learning environment and to meet the record-keeping demands of the typical school system” (171). This task would require all teachers to be up to speed with using the tools provided to either contribute information or completely manage data.
Some tools may be more frequently used than others like email. A teacher with a personal email would still hold the responsibility of monitoring the school email address. The email address provided by the school is the one that will be publicly accessible. A teacher holds the responsibility of using the tools that match the information attached to the role.

  16. I believe teachers should be required to be knowledgeable in each productivity tool. If teachers are knowledgeable in the tool they will be able to provide the students with a variety of ways to create a unit or lesson plan. Having knowledge or an understanding of how each tools works can facilitate a teachers task, thus providing the teacher with better time management.

  17. I think teachers should be knowledgeable about all of the tools made available to them by the district or school because it is to our benefit. We are required to perform the standards of which one says we must use the technology to enhance our professional productivity. The school provides us with the Administrative software such as a suite of productivity tools including a word processor, spreadsheet, database, and presentation tools as well as emails in order for use to do our jobs well and represent the school and district well. The technology is geared to make us teachers more efficient with the time and resources we have been given. In today's world with all the demands on teachers to perform and help students learn and pass all the standardized test, it would be to our own disadvantage not to use the tools meant to make our job possible.

  18. Regina Littlejohn:

Due to the rising demand of technology and so much growth in relation to technology within classrooms, it is extremely vital that teachers be knowledgeable of the various technology tools being utilized within the classroom. It is also vital for tea hers to be aware of technology tools for themselves that can be incorporated within their classroom to enhance the learning of the ultra students.
